MCSD: App Builder Certification Path: Microsoft 70-480 Exam

My current position involves some Microsoft-based software development so one of my goals this year is to obtain the MCSD: App Builder certification.

It's been over 10 years since my last Microsoft exam so my old certs had been retired awhile ago.   Microsoft also made some significant changes to their certification programs last year.

Certification Path

There's a couple paths for those interested in the MCSD:

  • MCSA: Web Applications (70-480 & 70-486)

  • MCSA: Universal Windows Platform (70-483 & 70-357)

  • MCSD Elective Exam (choose from a list of 10 exams)

I'm more interested in web applications so I decided to pursue the first option and start with the 70-480 exam.

70-480 Exam Topics

This exam is unique in that it doesn't actually cover any Microsoft technologies.   The questions are on HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES5), and jQuery.

For anyone with a couple years of experience in the topics, the exam should be straightforward.   I was able to pass the 70-480 exam after studying the topics for a week.

However, there are some areas that I wasn't very familiar with such as HTML5 canvas, web workers, and web sockets.

Here are some of the resources that I found helpful for the exam:

You can find a PDF version of the exam reference book if you do some digging online.

Exam Format

There are 50 questions in multiple choice or drag and drop format.     Candidates are given 150 minutes to complete the exam.

Discounted Pricing

The retail price for Microsoft exams is $165,  but I purchased a discounted voucher from   The caveat is that you must take the exam within a certain amount of time (usually 30-60 days).   Since this was no issue for me, I was able to save $40 doing this.
